THE THIRD MARQUIS/MARQUESS

A roasdside memorial in granite, at Currabally (aka Corbally), County Kilkenny, to the 3rd Marquis/Marquess of Waterford, killed nearby in a hunting accident on 29th March 1859, at the young age of 47. The memorial was erected in the 1920s.

The difficult-to-read inscription on the base is as follows:

" Henry, 3rd Marquis of Waterford, killed by a fall from his horse,  while hunting, 29th March 1859."

(I had to get rid of many briars, whitethorn, also much moss and other vegetation, to get this image!)

A  superb bronze memorial to the above gentleman, at Clonagam church, Portlaw, reads:

HENRY DE LA POER
3RD MARQUIS OF WATERFORD, EARL OF AND VISCOUNT TYRONE, BARON BERESFORD
OF BERESFORD COUNTY CAVAN, AND BARON DE LA POER OF CURRAGHMORE, WATERFORD, IN THE PEERAGE OF IRELAND.
BARON TYRONE OF HAVERFORDWEST, PEMBROKESHIRE IN THE PEERAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN.
BORN APRIL 26TH 1811. KILLED OUT HUNTING AT CORBALLY, COUNTY KILKENNY, MARCH 29TH 1859.

All the text on the marble base was in capitals only.

I have a number of photographs of the memorial which I will include  in the Clonagam church section later.
