Distinctive Portlaw Houses # 1

This beautiful building, a few miles south of Portlaw, built in the 1800s
as the rectory for Guilcagh church, was later used as a school for some time.
The house has been modernised in recent years to the highest standards
and is once more a dwelling house.

  1. Thank you for sharing this picture. It is indeed a a beautiful building. I believe my family may have lived there for a time. George Saunders was the school master for Ballycahane from 1850's at least to the 1870's. He married Catherine Thompson at Guilcagh Church on the 24th Feb 1855. They also lived in Portlaw.
I would be happy to hear from anyone with more information regarding this building as a Rectory or school, Guilcagh Church, or anything regarding this family.

Thank you Seán for this wonderful blog.
