January 10th 2013: Picture from the Past.

A PICTURE FROM THE PAST!

The Drawing Room at Woodlock Convent circa1910, from a postcard.

The postcard was published by Hughes, Photographer, Waterford, and printed in Treves (? difficult to read).
The postage rates at the time, mentioned on the card, were 1/2d (a ha'penny) inland and 1d (a penny) foreign
i.e. (for those unfamiliar with the once used Pound) the 1/480th. and 1/240th of a Pound respectively!

The sister who switched off the lights at Woodlock for the last time kindly gave me the card.  Will include her name here, if someone recognises her from a January 2011 series of images on this Blog.

(Thanks likewise to my friend, Tom Grace, who scanned the card for me, my own scanner currently not functioning).

January 7th 2013

Tonsorial history was made in Portlaw before Christmas, when local business-man, Liam Walsh,      opened a new gents' hairdressing shop, aptly called MAYFIELD BARBERS. This is after a gap of over forty years, when the last barber in the place operated in the building  beside the library, presently used by Mid-Way Youth Project. Prior to that, over fifty years ago,  a barber operated in Brown Street, opposite the present pharmacy. His name was Charlie McCarthy.

Liam, who has studied at the Cork Academy of Hairdressing, for the past eighteen months, is seen here attending to one of  his first customers, Michael O'Brien.
This new asset to Portlaw is open each day from Tuesday till Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm.

At the Cork Academy, Liam received a Diploma in Gents' Hairdressing on successfully completing the lengthy course. In addition, he received an Award of Merit, both now proudly hanging in his establishment.
Not just satisfied with the successes mentioned above,
Liam is now studying for a City & Guilds Diploma in Barbering - Level 2.
at Boston Barbers in Kilkenny.

His many friends in the area wish Liam the Best of Luck in his endeavours,
which have already got off to an excellent start!
